We contacted Schilling Horticulture when we needed some assistance with our trees and landscaping. Everything had been installed several years ago, and due to time some plants had died, others had become massively overgrown, and our yard was a hot mess. Norm came out and took a look and we decided to proceed in a couple of steps.

First the trees - the tree team was busy but able to come out about 3 weeks later and did a phenomenal job! They trimmed up our Desert Museum Palo Verde, chaste trees, and Texas olive. Everything was gorgeous when done - simply beautiful trees. They also took down several shrubs and an unstable tree that needed to be removed for step 2.

Norm, Elizabeth, and Ed then came out to review everything and go over what plants to install and where. They walked the property with us, and went over all the options. These 3 are passionate about plants! They found a few days in their busy schedule for the install, and everything went beautifully. A new irrigation system, and enough desert flowers, succulents/cacti to keep things low maintenance but interesting around the established plants we wanted to keep. They were even able to repurpose some large rock we had in our raised beds that we wanted moved. The crew was on time, friendly, efficient, and worked HARD in the heat. Elizabeth and Ed stayed on top of the install and kept us informed in regard to everything happening. And the finished product is gorgeous!

Top to bottom, this has been a great experience. I will have them out later this year to handle maintenance on the established plants that will need some clean up at that point. I wanted a company that loves desert plants and that I could trust with maintaining them. Schilling Horticulture is the one.

Highly highly recommend this company for anyone looking for guidance with any aspect of their yard. We have several 15-20 year old trees in our yard, one of which is a huge california pepper tree. It had become very overgrown and was starting to show a lot of signs of stress including broken and dead branches. I had a conversation with Norm on the phone, and scheduled for Joe to come out for a free assessment. Norm and Joe were both incredibly knowledable and explained everything about my trees to me, and answered all of my questions. The California pepper needed a huge cut back due to a huge cracked branch and lots of dead weight.
I scheduled to have their guys come out to cut back the pepper tree, and shape up my other 2 trees as well. They also cut down a salt cedar tree that we had already tried to get rid of and covered the stump with herbicide so it won't come back.
They were on time, and did a fantastic job. The main guy who came out to complete the pruning was incredibly friendly and knowledable as well, I wish I had thought to get his name.
Everyone I interacted with at this company has been lovely and I would highly recommend using them for your landscaping needs! I plan to have Norm out for a design consultation soon as well.

He really took the time to help us understand our new environment and what would thrive in our area. A couple of summers ago, we almost lost some plants and our GORGEOUS front yard Ash Tree suffered dead limbs. It was a perfect BAD storm: painters left the irrigation off in July (i should have checked), my husband tried to fix everything with fertilizer, but it was too hot in July, and he topped it off with grub control. It was all too much for our poor plants and trees.

We called in Norm Schilling and his company Schilling Horticulture to help! They have been putting their Liquid Fertilizer on twice in spring and once in fall. They pruned all of our trees.

The result: WOWOW!!!!!!!! Everything is uber green, loaded with flowers, and HAPPY!!! Not just the trees - everything in the ground is happy! Our backyard is our sanity, our sanctuary, and Norm saved it for us!

I have known Norm for YEARS, since he taught free tree pruning classes at the old Desert Demonstration Gardens. His knowledge of horticulture is immense; his love of plants and trees knows no bounds.

We decided to do a complete landscaping overhaul, front and back.  Our yard had grass when we bought the house and the sprinkler system was failing.  We had been making bandaid fixes until we had enough saved up and then also could no longer make the fixes without a much larger sprinkler system fix.  It was time.

We called a few companies for quotes and selected Schilling Horticulture.  Norm came out and talked with us and got an idea what we were looking for and what our goal was.  We then met with our designer, Laura, and she got a more detailed idea of what we were looking for.  She and Carlos came out and measured our yard and we were then presented with a beautiful design plan and binder.  Laura took the time to go over the design with us, the plants and trees that she selected, the materials that were going to be used; everything was put nicely into a binder with plant information sheets and scaled design plan.  We made a few minor changes and the plan was finalized.

When it was time for work to begin, Carlos and his crew arrived and immediately got to work on demolition.  We consistently had the same two crewmembers, Ever and Jose, along with more guys on site as more work was needed.  Ever and Jose worked so hard!  They were on site every morning, and at the end of each day cleaned up the work site and made sure everything was put away, both in our yard and on the street where the materials were delivered and dumpster was placed.  The care and details they took through each step of the process was impeccable.

They made sure the site was clean at the end of each day.  When the plants arrived, they took care to place the plants according to plan and then to be careful walking around once the plants were in the ground.

I had saved one plant from the original yard and wanted it replanted next to our chaste tree.  I spoke with Ever about this and he made sure it was taken care of and that a drip line was added so this rescue plant would get water.  A funny story, on a site visit, I was talking with Laura and explaining this at the same time that Ever was explaining it to Carlos.  I appreciate the care that was taken for this small request.

Every day we could see the progress made.  And throughout the month, the work came together.  We were extremely impressed with how quickly everything happened once work started.  For our complete overhaul, they were finished in three weeks!

The process was lengthy (it was little over a year from our first discussion to the time work started – they are a busy company!) Laura made sure we understood this at the start, and was communicative throughout the process and the wait.  The finished yard/landscaping was well worth the wait and we are so happy with our new yard and landscaping!

At the final walk-through we were given instructions for maintenance, how to work the new irrigation timer and lighting controls.  And will have another site visit in six months to make sure all the plants and trees have taken well and are thriving.

We could not be happier with the completed work and know that we made the right choice with Schilling Horticulture!  Norm and Laura were wonderful to work with; Carlos and Laura were always available for any questions. Ever and Jose were hard workers and were so nice.  Schilling Horticulture = AMAZING!
